Why Hors Century?  Here’s why.

When you spend four days in the saddle and over 500 miles are rolling under your wheel on the way from North Carolina to Washington DC, you have a lot of time to think.  I love riding, and I’ve done my fair share of it over many years.  And this particular ride was fantastic, but the saddle time sucked.  It didn’t suck because of the distance.  It sucked because of the chamois time.  Over ten hours in my bib shorts on some days, and frankly, it hurt.  Being in the cycling gear industry, I had the best bibs at my disposal to use for this ride.   But what I noticed was that even with the “best” bibs on the market, as the hours passed, the shorts relaxed and loosened.  And you know what happens next.  Yep, the chamois started moving around down there.  Which started chaffing.  Oh, and it was hot, too from the start, which meant the chamois stayed moist from the first hour on.  A wayward and wet chamois do not the best riding conditions make.  I think Shakespeare said that.  

Anyway, with miles and time to think through this problem, I formulated a plan.  With over 140 miles to cover in a single day, I decided to change into new bibs at every rest stop.  I changed them three times that day, and it worked like a charm.  Goodbye loose bibs, hello saddle comfort.  But three wardrobe changes?  There had to be a better solution.  And there was.  When I came back from that epic ride, I started working on developing a bib that wouldn’t lose its shape even after long efforts.  And thus, the Century Bib Short was born.  Here’s how I did it.  By focusing on every panel on the bib short, I was able to fine tune its function with cut and specific materials to address the loosening I experienced with other bibs.  Then, I sourced a high-performance chamois that is perforated and can dissipate that pesky moisture more effectively.   Working closely with our Classic designers, we tightened up the front of the bib short with a combination of five new materials – two of them compression fabrics, changed the cut of the pattern and changed the straps.  My reasoning here was to make sure there was no movement in the short so that everything from gripper to upper stays firmly in place.  It’s not enough to just make the short tight.  It must be perfectly cut and patterned to conform to the rider’s body while in the riding position.  And yes, we mean riding position (hint – if your bib is super-comfy standing up, your chamois is going to move when you bend over into riding position, and you’ll be as miserable as me at my halfway to DC point).  The next thing we addressed was the chamois.  After countless samples and testing, we found the holy grail.  The Dolomiti pad we selected for our Century bibs uses two different foam densities with 3mm and 8mm holes.  These holes significantly increase the passage of air and moisture, allowing it to dry in less time than the traditional chamois.  And, did we mention it feels pretty incredible?   In case we didn’t, it feels pretty incredible.  So, after four uncomfortable days of thinking about it and eleven months of product development and testing, I feel that we have perfected the product we set out to create.  We’re fairly confident that given a chance, the Classic Hors Category Century Bib Short will become your go-to.  How do we know?  Because we ride, too.

Sizing:  It is our opinion that these have a Euro fit.  I would suggest going up a size in these.  I have the sizing chart below but if the sizing chart says to go with a medium I would think about a large, especially if you are in the upper range of a size.  For instance if you were a 32 I would move up to a large.

If you can picture your favorite oversized t-shirt, you’re well on your way to knowing what a sport fit is. Sport fit describes a a fit that is loose-fitting and relaxed. Great for riding around town in a style that’s going to give you more than enough room to move around on or off the bike. If sport fit descibes how you want your jersey to fit, you should order atleast 1 size larger than the sizing chart recommends.

If you’re comfortable in a slightly more tailored look, then the Pro fit is probably the fit you’re looking for. More fitted to the body than the Sport fit, the Pro fit is going to begin to give you some of the performance features of a higher-end jersey, but it’s still going to offer some room to breath. If pro fit describes how you want your jersey to fit, the size recommended by the sizing chart should provide the fit you prefer.

Hors Category Century Compression Bib Short

Why Hors Category Century?  Here’s why.

When you spend four days in the saddle and over 500 miles are rolling under your wheel on the way from North Carolina to Washington DC, you have a lot of time to think.  I love riding, and I’ve done my fair share of it over many years.  And this particular ride was fantastic, but the saddle time sucked.  It didn’t suck because of the distance.  It sucked because of the chamois time.  Over ten hours in my bib shorts on some days, and frankly, it hurt.  Being in the cycling gear industry, I had the best bibs at my disposal to use for this ride.   But what I noticed was that even with the “best” bibs on the market, as the hours passed, the shorts relaxed and loosened.  And you know what happens next.  Yep, the chamois started moving around down there.  Which started chaffing.  Oh, and it was hot, too from the start, which meant the chamois stayed moist from the first hour on.  A wayward and wet chamois do not the best riding conditions make.  I think Shakespeare said that.  

Anyway, with miles and time to think through this problem, I formulated a plan.  With over 140 miles to cover in a single day, I decided to change into new bibs at every rest stop.  I changed them three times that day, and it worked like a charm.  Goodbye loose bibs, hello saddle comfort.  But three wardrobe changes?  There had to be a better solution.  And there was.  When I came back from that epic ride, I started working on developing a bib that wouldn’t lose its shape even after long efforts.  And thus, the Century Bibshort was born.  Here’s how I did it.  By focusing on every panel on the bib short, I was able to fine tune its function with cut and specific materials to address the loosening I experienced with other bibs.  Then, I sourced a high-performance chamois that is perforated and can dissipate that pesky moisture more effectively.   Working closely with our Classic designers, we tightened up the front of the bib short with a combination of five new materials – two of them compression fabrics, changed the cut of the pattern and changed the straps.  My reasoning here was to make sure there was no movement in the short so that everything from gripper to upper stays firmly in place.  It’s not enough to just make the short tight.  It must be perfectly cut and patterned to conform to the rider’s body while in the riding position.  And yes, we mean riding position (hint – if your bib is super-comfy standing up, your chamois is going to move when you bend over into riding position, and you’ll be as miserable as me at my halfway to DC point).  The next thing we addressed was the chamois.  After countless samples and testing, we found the holy grail.  The Dolomiti pad we selected for our Century bibs uses two different foam densities with 3mm and 8mm holes.  These holes significantly increase the passage of air and moisture, allowing it to dry in less time than the traditional chamois.  And, did we mention it feels pretty incredible?   In case we didn’t, it feels pretty incredible.  So, after four uncomfortable days of thinking about it and eleven months of product development and testing, I feel that we have perfected the product we set out to create.  We’re fairly confident that given a chance, the Classic Hors Category Century Bib Short will become your go-to.  How do we know?  Because we ride, too.

Classic Fondo Bib Shorts

The Classic Fondo bib shorts have been designed with comfort and style in mind.  The key to the comfort of any bib short is the chamois and the multi thickness, multil density antomically shape design does just that. The Lycra is 220 grams which will provide solid support while also being fully dyed.  What does fully dyed mean?  Well when you put on other team bib shorts the panels start to look a bit grey, not with these bib shorts.  The fully dyed Lycra keeps the bib shorts solid black.  The upppers are made from a stretchable mesh that will help keep you cool on the hottest of days.  And finally one of the most important features are the leg grippers.  We used a 7.5cm gripper with silicon fibers on the back side to help hold it in place.  Leg grippers that stay in place is a must and one we focus on.  You will not be dissapointed with the Fondo bib shorts.

Pro 1.0 Bib Shorts

The Pro 1.0 bib short is designed to keep you comfortable on the longest of days.

Making a bib short is similar to putting together a high quality bicycle. If one part is off or not working up to the standards of the rest of the bicycle you will not get the full experience. and negatively impact the entire ride. That is the case with a bib short. A bib short is made up of multiple key parts and if one part fails or is improperly designed it does not matter how well executed the others are. The bib short is a fail. We feel we have used our experience and our customers feedback to create a short that merges the key components into a high performing custom product at a great price point.

The first thing customers look at with shorts is the chamois and we feel our Pro 1 delivers what every rider is after, comfort. Our full coverage chamois, I will admit is rather large, but that is on purpose and helps us deliver what we feel is one of the key comfort features. Over the years I have found that when a bib short irritates me it is in the area where the chamois is sewn into the bib shorts and rubs the side of the nose of the saddle. The larger chamois gets the seams well away from any friction points near the saddle. As for the padding it uses multi-density foam that does a great job in distributing pressure without being too thick.

Another area we paid close attention to is the leg gripper. The leg gripper is key for a good fitting bib short. Without a good leg gripper, and there are many out there, the bib short will slide up. When it slides up it allows the bib shorts material and chamois to bunch up in the crotch area which quickly leads to irritation. With our leg gripper the bib short settles into its natural location on the bike after a few minutes. At this point it will hold the bib short leg panel tight enough that the there is no bunching of material near your crotch. The leg gripper also performs well with knee and leg warmers.

One other area that can be a source of frustration for our customers is the bib short uppers. The stretch on an upper must be just right to hold the bib shorts firmly in place but not be restrictive on your torso. While our uppers are made with mesh for breathe-ability they are not revolutionary BUT the attention to a proper length should provide a more comfortable fit both on and off the bike. Holding the waist line in its proper location is also key to the chamois and comfort.

Sport Fit

If you can picture your favorite oversized t-shirt, you’re well on your way to knowing what a sport fit is. Sport fit describes a a fit that is loose-fitting and relaxed. If you’re comfortable in a slightly more tailored look, then the Pro fit is probably the fit you’re looking for. More fitted to the body than the Sport fit, the Pro fit is going to begin to give you some of the performance features of a higher-end jersey, but it’s still going to offer some room to breath. If pro fit describes how you want your jersey to fit, the size recommended by the sizing chart should provide the fit you prefer.
